Albany -- An annual Albany Christmas tradition honors cancer survivors and memorializes those who lost their battle with cancer.

Tonight marked the 25th year of the annual "Lights of Love" tree lighting event.

It's sponsored by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and the Junior Woman's Club of Albany.

This year's proceeds will help build the Willson Hospice House.

Tree lighter Sara Underdown is undergoing cancer treatment and could not attend the ceremony.

One of her nurses, Amie Lockheart, lit the tree in her honor.

"It's the spirit of the thing.  It's Christmas time, it's festive.  And they raise funds.  And the funds go directly to support these patients," said Dr. Phillip Roberts, Phoebe's Hematology/Oncology Medical Director.

The event was dedicated to Dr. Roberts, who has worked at Phoebe since 1980.

He was presented with a special award of appreciation.
