Albany -- Wally Backman will officially not be managing the South Georgia Peanuts next season.
The team and the South Coast League announcing Monday Backman has been named manager of the Joliet JackHammers of the Independent Northern League, after interviewing with Joliet last month.
Backman managed the Peanuts to a championship in the league's first season, and also took home SCL manager of the year honors, despite a few flare-ups with the league office.
Backman was suspended from the team on a couple of occasions for outbursts on the field, and resigned in protest of the leagues drug testing process in August, before rejoining the Peanuts a few days later.
The manager was also instrumental in sending five players from the South Georgia roster on to Major League Baseball organizations, more than any other team in the league.
The JackHammers finished 23-25 in the eight team Independent Northern League last year, and open up the season in late May.
The Northern League will play its 16th season of baseball in 2008.
