Albany -- The Albany Humane society stressed the need to care for animals at its annual Christmas Open House Thursday night.

The holiday celebration started with a check presentation. The Albany Autumn Classic Charity Horse Show raised $8,000 for the shelter.

A Christmas tree was also lit in front of the building. Each of the 3,929 lights represents an animal that had to be put down this year.

"We do a memorial tree and on that tree there is one white light for every animal euthanized in this facility. And although it's beautiful to see all the lights the symbol behind it is very sad and depressing. And it is our goal that one day the tree be dark. That's our major goal," said Albany Humane Society Director, Donna Strickland.

The number of euthanized pets actually decreased. Last year, the Albany Humane Society put down more than 4,500 animals.
