Man's truck runs over three people, killing one

December 6, 2007

Albany -- One woman was killed, her four year old daughter and twin sister were injured when they were run down by a truck as they walked into an Albany restaurant.

Police say a 79-year-old man at the drive through window suddenly accelerated, and ran down the three people.

It happened about 11:45 at the Burger King on North Slappey, just north of the Bypass. Seventy-nine-year-old Raymond Williams of Smithville was parked at the drive through window when his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup sped forward and hit the three on the sidewalk at the door.

The truck continued through a flower bed, hopped the curb, plowed through two fences and a drainage ditch, before stopping in some bushes just short of US 19.

Thirty-year-old Judith Eubanks of Shellman was killed instantly. Her four year old daughter, and Eubanks' twin sister, 30-year-old Julie Todd of Dawson were injured. They were taken to Phoebe Putney Hospital for treatment. The driver was treated at the scene by EMS, but was not injured.

Terri Barrett was heading into the Burger King just after the crash, and said the scene was chaos. "They were just running out, just running out in disbelief," Barrett said.

Williams said when he cranked his truck the accelerator stuck; he said he turned his vehicle into the building to try to avoid the three, but still hit them. Charges against Williams are pending as their investigation continues.
