Deputies investigate Lowndes County shooting

November 29, 2007

Lowndes County - SWAT officers were called to a Lowndes County home Thursday afternoon after deputies thought a man had been murdered.

It turns out he killed himself.

A man called 911 to say he was being harassed.

A deputy showed up at the home on Bemiss Road a few miles north of Moody Air Force Base around 4:00 PM.

As he pulled up to the house, he heard a gunshot.  "He heard a single gunshot, a black male came out the front door and as he fell, he closed the door of the trailer behind him and our deputy thought he had a shooting up here," says Captain JD Yeager of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office.

Officers evacuated the neighborhood and the Special Response Team used tear gas to make sure the home was empty.

As they searched the home, they found a gun under the front steps and now believe the man killed himself.

They have not released his name.
