Albany - Dougherty High has filed the paperwork with the Georgia High School Association to continue playing at the AAA classification for the next two years.
Dougherty was placed in AA for the next two school years based on the latest state department of education attendance numbers used for reclassification.
Dougherty's enrollment puts it at the top in AA but the Trojans believe it will be better to remain in AAA with city rivals Westover and Monroe and the football team has the numbers to remain competitive at the AAA level.
Schools can move up in classificaiton but cannot move down.
The GHSA will begin assigning schools to regions next week.
Schools not happy with their region assignment can petition to move to a different region.
Once that process is completed, reclassification will be finished for another two years.
