Albany -- The Albany Police Department want to make sure you stay safe while you are completing your holiday shopping.

Several officers stood in front of the Albany Mall passing out flyers full of safety tips.

This is not the first time Albany Police officers have done this.

But this is the first year they have stood in front of the mall making direct contact with shoppers and store owners.

"We have more shoppers out who are looking to spend more money. Therefore the opportunity is greater. And unfortunately those who choose to break the law, this is a good opportunity for them," said Albany Police Officer Michael Cunningham.

Officers say that you should try to carry as little cash as possible during your shopping trips.

Always put big packages in the trunk of your car.

They also encourage shoppers to park in well lit parking lots.
