Albany - The number of homeless people in South Georgia might surprise you. Housing authority workers and Department of community affairs from across South Georgia met together to discuss how to correctly count the amount of homeless people in each community.

In addition to people who find shelter under bridges, those who sleep in emergency shelters or motels because of economic hardship can be considered homeless. Kathy Hart said, "You'll be able to get more federal dollars, more funding in order to provide for your homeless count population."

Volunteers will work to collect data on people who fit homeless categories in January for the next census count.
