Valdosta State ready to run

November 13, 2007

Valdosta -- The Valdosta State basketball team has high hopes this season, after advancing to the NCAA South Regional last year.

The Blazers already have one exhibition game under their belt, falling 87-66 at Florida State.

VSU head coach Mike Helfer is in his third year year with the program.

Coach Helfer says the Blazers graduated some very talented seniors with Mike Crain and Herman Burge, but the depth of this years squad gives Valdosta State the opportunity to run its opponents ragged.

"I think we're a little deeper this year," says Helfer. "I think we can go 10 or 11 deep and maybe not have as much of a drop off as we had in the past. Hopefully we can use that to our advantage by wearing some teams out, making the game up-tempo, and seeing if we can't utilize our depth."

The Blazers open the season against Carver Thursday at 8pm at The Complex.
