Marine Corps celebrates birthday

November 8, 2007

Albany - Happy Birthday U.S. Marine Corps, number 232. MCLB Albany celebrated today with a cake cutting ceremony.

As is tradition, the first piece of cake was sliced with a sword, the given to the oldest Marine present and passed on to the youngest Marine.

"It's just very special. They are passing down tradition. The Master Gunnery Sergeant who's the oldest Marine here, passed it on to me. That's the symbolism of the cake cutting ceremony," said Cpl. Leo Flores.

Lt. Caleb Eames said, "By passing that cake, the oldest Marine really puts a big responsibility on the youngest Marine's shoulders to carry on the tradition of the Marine Corps, a tradition of excellence, honor, dedication and courage."

In addition to the cake cutting ceremony, Marines will continue the celebration with a Birthday Ball.
