Tifton--  Vandals damaged a memorial to South Georgia veterans.

When the sun goes down at Veterans Park in Downtown Tifton, a light illuminates more than 80 names of Tifton veterans killed while in action. Now, that light also shows a big stain after vandals threw eggs on the marble monument.

Army veteran Jack Stone helped to design and build the monument about 10 years ago and was shocked to see the damage.

"It's just like a slap in the face you know?," said Stone, "It's very true to all the veterans and all the Tift Countians."

The memorial was washed twice but the stain wouldn't come out. Stone hopes to find a way to get rid of it by Saturday when a Veterans Day service will take place. It starts at 11 a.m. in Downtown Tifton.
