Camilla- Voters in Camilla will elect a mayor Tuesday.
Twelve year incumbent Jay Powell is challenged by political newcomer Mary Jo Haywood. Both candidates agree that utility bills are a big issue. Both also want to encourage jobs and economic development in Camilla. Powell hopes his record over the last 12 years will get him re-elected, but Haywood says Camilla needs a change.
"We've put in, re-paved streets, we've put in sidewalks, put in curbs, gutter, in a lot of different areas of town. We have rebuilt sidewalks, we've put in sidewalks, we've recovered from two devastating tornados one in 2000, one in 2003," said Mayor Jay Powell.
"There's a time for a change in policies and how policies and problems are dealt with that's the change Camilla needs," said Mary Jo Haywood, Mayoral Candidate.
Haywood says her previous experience on the school board will help her if she's elected. Powell says as President of Georgia's Municipal Association he's made contacts with state officials that could eventually help Camilla's residents.
