Albany-- Two men wanted to be big-time Georgia lottery winners. But Albany police say they stole the tickets to claim the cash.
23-year-old Clifford Thomas and 24-year-old Richard Taylor are in the Dougherty County Jail, charged with burglary and theft by receiving.
APD received a tip from the Georgia Lottery that several scratch-off tickets were stolen and to be on the lookout. They sent surveillance footage to surrounding agencies and the media.
Surveillance video pictures show Thomas and Taylor trying to cash in stolen tickets at an Albany store. You can also see the van they left in. Monday, a Dougherty County police officer recognized the van and pulled it over. They found Thomas and a lot of stolen goods inside.
"We work well with all of our surrounding agencies and we were happy that they were willing and able to help us in correcting this problem and catching these guys," said Investigator Schemika Foster with Albany Police.
Police found everything from cartons of cigarettes to several boxes of condoms. Dougherty County police believe the men knocked through the back walls of several stores in the county and the city.
27-year-old Linward Jones was a suspect in the case but Albany Police say he posted bond and they cleared him of all charges.
