Sunday alcohol sales boosts business

October 17, 2007

Valdosta - It's been nearly a year since Valdosta voters approved Sunday alcohol sales in restaurants and hotels.

So far, 30 businesses have Sunday sales licenses and it seems Sunday sales are up.  "We have seen an increase, probably around 10-15 percent increase. A lot more drinkers now and more alcohol sales," says Loco's owner Myron Paulk.

And with the football season now underway, many restaurants like Loco's Bar and Grill hope the Sunday sales will go up even more.  "We have NFL Sunday tickets. People realize that and start coming out more. Sit down and have a beer on Sunday to watch the game," he adds.

City leaders say the success Loco's is seeing is being echoed throughout Valdosta.  "A lot of positive feedback from those participating in the Sunday Alcohol sales permitting process," says Mark Barber, a deputy City Manager.

And when the businesses renew their licenses next year, they'll collect the numbers to prove it.  "We are hoping to see triple or quadruple the numbers, because that's what we are hearing as well," Barber says.

They say most existing businesses that qualify have their Sunday liquor license and they now believe it will be another tool to help them attract new ones to the city.
