Valdosta -- Valdosta State suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, allowing Delta State to come back from a 24-0 deficit and knock off the Blazers 35-31.
The loss makes it tough for VSU to win the conference title, with North Alabama and Delta State now ahead of the Blazers and atop the Gulf South standings.
Valdosta State is still ranked very high in the region rankings, and senior tight end Zach Parker says the ultimate goal is still within reach.
"Our goals are still intact," says Parker. "The ultimate goal is the national championship. The region rankings came out, and we're #2, which still puts us in the driver seat as far as getting a bye week. We're still right where we need to be, we just need to put the past behind us and look forward to our goals."
Head coach David Dean adds, "We put our backs up against the wall with our Thursday night performance. If we want to be where we want to be at the end of the season, we got to treat every game like it's a playoff game."
Valdosta State will go on the road Saturday to take on West Alabama, with the kick-off set for eight o'clock.
