New York -- New York senator Charles Schumer is pushing a plan that would give the United States Department of Agriculture the power to shut down meat processing plants if they fail food safety inspections.

In recent weeks, the government recalled 23 million pounds of meat after dozens of people suffered E. coli infections linked to tainted frozen patties.
