Albany--An early morning fire damages several businesses near east Albany.  That fire started around 2:30 AM.

Firefighters say that the fire has damaged at least five businesses located inside the Shackleford Shopping Center in Albany.

About sixteen fire fighters and five units responded to the scene around 2:40 this morning.  Battalion Chief Matthew Jefferson says the fire started inside High Dollar Fashion.

The women's clothing store is located at 109 South Broadway.  That fire then spread quickly to two other businesses located at 105 & 107 South Broadway. The fire also spread to two other businesses located at 251 and 253 East Oglethorpe.

All five businesses received extensive smoke damage according to Jefferson. It took firefighters about thirty minutes to get the fire under control.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene after an Albany State student on his way home from doing laundry noticed the fire and called 911. News 10 spoke to him on camera and this is how he described the scene:

"We were sitting at the traffic light when we saw heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building. As we were coming up, we could hear crackling and popping. The flames then came from the side of the building and it just grew rapidly," says Desmond Mack.

An Albany police officer was on the scene re-directing traffic away from the shopping center earlier this morning.  Fortunately, there was no one inside the shopping center when the fire started, and there are no injuries to report.

Fire fighters still aren't sure the cause of that fire. They hope to determine the cause sometime later this morning.
