Aviary construction delayed

October 8, 2007

Albany - Another delay on the expansion of the Flint Riverquarium. Dougherty County Commissioners decid to postpone approval for construction of the Aviary at the Riverquarium.

At Monday's meeting, commissioners questioned why only one contractor placed a bid for construction and why there is less than six percent minority participation.

Riverquarium CEO Scott Loehr said he was disappointed, but understood their decision. "They are doing the job they are elected to do and that's being responsible with their fiduciary responsibilities as commissioners so, another seven days, we'll be patient, go back and gather the information they requested and this time next week, we'll be going forward."

The total project is budgeted for $1 Million of special tax money. Commissioners say they plan to approve the project, but want to understand how the project was bid out and why minorities aren't participating first.
