2007 Riverfront Run starts this weekend

October 5, 2007

Albany--Southwest Georgia has the highest rate of cancer mortality in the state.  One cancer coalition is working hard to reduce those deaths.  On Saturday, the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition will kick off its fourth annual Riverfront Run in downtown Albany.

Every year the event raises more than $20,000 for cancer patients living in southwest Georgia.

Unfortunately, statistics show, that the incidence of cancer in Southwest Georgia is 35% higher than for the state overall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 500,000 cancer deaths will occur in the U.S. this year. About 15,000 of those deaths will occur right here in Georgia.

Organizers are expecting a good turnout for Saturday's event.

"This money goes to directly support cancer patients. They get medicine and wigs, transportation, lodging, things that aren't normally provided to them from their insurance," says Jennifer Johnston.

"Your participation does make a difference. If you would like to pre-register, it closes at noon on Friday, so try to get your registration in by then, but if you can't, please still come down, you can register the day of the event," says Beth Bauer.

The 5K race will start at 8:30 AM. The one mile walk begins exactly one hour later.  Registration the day of the event will cost you $20 for adults and $15 for children.
