Welcome to my first edition of high school football picks. I know we are at the midpoint of the season but this something that I have been wanting to do since the summer. But with the hectic schedule, I finally have time to sit down and share my thoughts on the weekly high school football schedule. I think I picked a good week to start with Thomas County Central at Cairo, Tift County at Valdosta and Irwin County at Wilcox County just to name a few of the games on Friday's schedule. Here we go.
Tift County at Valdosta
After not winning any region 1-AAAAA games last year, Rick Tomberlin's Cats opened with a big win at home over Colquitt County. Now they get defending region champion Tift County. The Blue Devils coming off a loss at Thomas County Central that was two weeks ago and yes Tift County will be prepared. I think this game will be dominated by defense and I think Valdosta's rebound season continues... Cats 10-7.
Lowndes at Houston Co.
The Vikings season opening loss to Harrison has kept them below the radar. Which I am sure makes Randy McPherson happy. The Vikings showed Coffee though they are same caliber team that won consecutive state titles in 2004 and 2005. Houston County has lost three straight games and I think the streak continues this week... Vikings 34-13
Colquitt Co. at Coffee
The Trojans were brought back down to earth by Lowndes after their 4-0 start while Colquitt County is understandably struggling with so many new starters. With both teams losing their region opener, this game is a must and I must confess I think Coffee wins at home 24-21
Thomas Co. Central at Cairo
For the third week in a row, Thomas County Central faces an unbeaten team. That makes Yellow Jacket head coach Ed Pilcher happy because he wants his team to be ready for the state playoffs. The Yellow Jackets offense can score points in a hurry as they demonstrated last week against Monroe when TCC erased a 12 point deficit in the blink of an eye. Cairo has given the Jackets fits and their defense is certainly used to playing the Pilcher veer. The visiting team has had the edge in this series in this decade and I believe it continues this year... Thomas County Central wins 33-27
Lee Co. at Worth Co.
A non-region battle of two teams who both have one win and both have played better than their records. I think Lee County's running game will be the difference with the Trojans winning on the road 19-13
Dougherty at Americus-Sumter
The Panthers are off to solid 4-1 start under second year coach Mark Wilson while the Trojans continue to improve each day under first year coach Charles Flowers. Dougherty already has one win over a 1-AAAA school in Lee County but I am afraid Americus-Sumter has too many weapons in what should be shootout... Americus-Sumter 35-33
Thomasville at Cook
The Bulldogs are another team that may have been written off after an 0-2 start but AAA Cairo needed a huge comeback to nip the AA Dogs in overtime. Since region play has started, Thomasville has looked very strong with three straight wins. The Hornets have plenty of speed and should give Thomasville a big test but I think the Bulldogs stay unbeaten in the region..Thomasville 34-27
