Tifton --  Another Tift County company is shutting down, putting about 100 people out of work.

Prestolite Wire Corporation makes spark plug wires. It's operated at their Southwell Boulevard location since 1976. The company will shut down manufacturing operations by the end of June, but it will keep about a dozen employees to maintain an operational engineering and customer service center.

Tifton and Tift County officials say the Prestolite shutdown will be a short-term blow to the area's economy. "Anytime you have companies that close, that have been a part of the Tifton economy and the Tifton community it's a sad day for all of us here in Tifton," said Earl Denham of the Tifton and Tift County Chamber of Commerce.

Recently, Tifton Aluminum announced it will close this year putting 200 people out of work. More than 200 people lost their jobs last year when Shaw Industries closed a Tifton plant.

Chamber officials say they're negotiating with several companies to locate in the area.
