Deadly fire renews call for fire prevention

September 26, 2007

Lee County-  Investigators tell us the Long home did not have smoke detectors, something they say every home needs.

Firefighters say every family should also take other precautions to fireproof your home.  You should develop an escape plan and practice it.

"Once they create a fire escape plan we want people to practice the fire escape plan and every bedroom or room should have two means of egress be one of them a door and one of them a window," said Fire Chief James Howell.

If you have a second floor, firefighters recommend purchasing an emergency ladder.  You can also crawl out a window onto a ledge or roof to escape flames.  They also encourage parents to talk to children about the dangers of candles and matches.
