Truck driver charged in hitting school bus

Cairo-- A truck driver is now charged with crashing into a Grady County school bus.  

Thirteen students were taken to the hospital after the tractor trailer rear-ended the bus just before 4 p.m. Monday afternoon. The wreck happened at the intersection of Highway 84 and 20th street.

Cairo emergency workers had just finished training for rescue extrication when they got the call.  Although none of the students were trapped the training ensured they were prepared.  "Our personnel knew what to do, how to respond and we remained calm on the scene and that gave the parents some reassurance that the scene was under control," said Roderick Jolivette, Cairo's Interim Fire Chief.

The bus was turning left at a traffic light when the big rig slammed into it. Investigators say the truck's brakes weren't properly working.

The truck driver, 25 year-old Scottie Holland, is charged with failure to yield, driving with improper equipment and driving with a suspended license.
