154 ASU students depart to support "Jena 6"

September 19, 2007

Albany-  More than 150 Albany State University students are getting ready to pile onto buses and head to a rally Jena, Louisiana. They're going to support a group of black students charged in the beating of a white schoolmate.

Wednesday, students put the final arrangements together. More than 300 students signed up to make the trip and names had to be drawn from a hat to decide who would fill the 154 bus seats. Many wanted to go to have the opportunity to stand up for what they believe in.

"Because the students are so close to our age, the opportunity for them to be in the position we are, as collegiate students for that to be snatched away so abruptly and just for reason that the punishments are so extreme that its kind of personal to a lot of them," said Jazzmin Randall, Albany State University SGA President.

Students will leave ASU Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. and drive all night arriving in Jena Thursday in time for the 8:00 a.m. rally.  Hear about the student's trip Friday morning, during Today in Georgia.
