911 fee to be passed on to VOP users

September 18, 2007

Albany - Most of us pay a fee on our telephone bills for 911 service, and with changing technology, there are new fees for new products.

Voice-over internet protocol is a new type of phone system that uses the internet. Right now there is no charge for 911 service on that system, but people who use land lines and cell phones are being charged a dollar and fifty a month.

Albany City commissioners plan to make that fee universal for all phone users. The money generated will help off-set costs of running the 911 center.
