Worth County -- A quiet Sunday afternoon turned tragic for a Worth County man killed in what police say was a deadly tractor accident.

Police say that 34-year-old James Scott Starnes was thrown off his tractor while mowing his grass with a rotary mower in tow. Investigator's say Starnes was killed when the mower ran over him.

Emergency fire and rescue units were dispatched to 210 Peafowl Road shortly after 1 PM Sunday.

Neighbors say they were shocked to hear something like this happened just yards away from their homes.

Upon seeing the numerous emergency vehicles near her home, neighbor Deborah Riner said, "I thought , oh my God, what could have happened?"

While friends and family of James Scott Starnes arrived throughout the early afternoon, Worth County investigators along with Georgia State Troopers were at the scene of the accident for nearly two hours.

Police say that after Starnes was killed, his tractor continued moving until it drove itself into a nearby pond.

A family man according to those who knew him, investigators say Starnes lived off a stretch of dirt road at 210 Peafowl Road, with his wife and two young sons. His death is undoubtedly a shocking and untimely loss for the young family he now leaves behind.

"You know I've met them all and they're a really sweet family. They're a real tight family. Really tragic," said Riner.

The Worth County Sheriff's Office is in charge of the investigation.

They say Starnes' death appears to be the unfortunate result of a tragic accident.
