Keeping kids off drugs

September 10, 2007

Albany - Some children are surrounded by drugs, on their streets, even in their homes. CHAMPS, which stands for Choosing healthy activities and methods promoting safety, is a drug awareness program that teaches students about alternatives to a lifestyle involving drugs and alcohol.

Dougherty County Sheriff's Captain Kevin Sproul says the program needs more money. "In the war on drugs, this is just the front end of it here, trying to prevent kids from getting on drugs in the first place."

Commissioners will vote on the $3500 request at the regular meeting. The money comes out of fines paid by drug offenders.
