Americus  --  An Alabama man is now charged with the murder of a Sumter County woman.

Johnny Ray Cochran was stopped on an Alabama highway Wednesday and arrested for the death of Melanie Strickland.

Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith says Cochran became a suspect shortly after Strickland was found shot to death in her Middle River Road home.

Smith issued a warrant for Cochran's arrest Wednesday and he was arrested by the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

The murder investigation is still ongoing.
