Americus-- A troubled Americus night spot shut down and was reborn as a place to help students succeed in the classroom.
In the past, neighbors near the Sports Page on Highway 280 complained of loud music and investigators discovered underaged drinking and drug use there. The Sports Page has now transformed into The After Spot, an Intellectual Place for Teens.
The center offers free tutoring in the afternoons, internet access and parent-student pairing. It opened about a month ago and is partly run by a teacher who wanted to make a change in the county.
"As much as the schools offer after-school tutoring, I think that a lot of times kids need to get out of that environment and come to a different place. Because of the socialization aspect of it, I thought that this was something people would feel had more of a welcoming atmosphere," said Karen Glass.
The center also offers pool and video game tournaments to help entertain kids. Performances are held on the weekends. Organizers recently met with neighbors to make sure their music doesn't get too loud.
