Tifton-  More than a hundred turned out in Tifton to fight heart disease.

The American Heart Association's Heart Walk has scaled back its operations in smaller communities that raise less than $250,000 in funds. To make up for it, the Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation has planned their own event called "Stepping Out For Your Heart." The event won't be held until October, but Thursday the foundation held a fundraiser to raise awareness for the event.

"We hope to raise enough fund so that the people that can't afford preventative health which is frequently not covered by routine insurance can participate in preventative health and thus receive the benefit of it," said Dr. John Dorminy, Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation President.

The Stepping Out 5-K run and one mile walk will be held Saturday October 13th at the Tift County High School Northeast Campus in Tifton.

For more information on the event you can register online at www.tiftregional.com or call (229)353-6318.
