GHSA state basketball playoffs moving out of Albany

August 23, 2007

Albany - The rate increases at the Albany Civic Center have cost the city the Georgia High School Association state basketball sectional.

The Georgia High School Association notified Dougherty County School System athletic director Johnny Seabrooks that the AAA south sectional will be played at Columbus State University next March.

Seabrooks said the GHSA said it was not financially favorable for the sectional to be played at the Albany Civic Center.

Seabrooks says the costs to use the Civic Center for just one day was near $7000 and included a charge for security even though the Dougherty County School System could provide its own security with its own police force.

The GHSA has changed its state basketball format.

In 2008, the first two rounds will be played at the school of the highest seed and the final eight advance to the sectional round.

The GHSA state sectionals have been held in Albany for the last 20 years.
