Chase ends in drug arrest

Dougerhty County -- An Albany man faces several drug and traffic charges after he crashed his car while running from Dougherty County Police.

Dougherty County Police Officers chased a 2007 Mazda they saw run a red light on North Central street about 1 O-clock Tuesday afternoon. The driver crashed into a tree on North Carroll Street and then ran. 27-year old Shyron Smith was arrested.

Investigators found cocaine, scales, and other drug items in the car. Albany Dougherty Drug Unit Commander Derrell Smith it's important for law enforcers to work together on traffic stops like this one to fight drugs. "drugs usually get from point A to point B via motor vehicles. So if we can get it before it's delivered to the houses, we are that much ahead of the game."

The car was a rental. It sustained minor damage in the crash. Smith is charged with about a dozen drug and traffic offenses and is in the Dougherty County Jail.
