Thomasville-- Last week one of the oldest houses in Thomasville, built in the 1850s was demolished in the Fletcherville historic district.
The director of Thomasville Landmarks, Inc. says they should have had a chance to save the house. "With a loss of such an old house, that was in such good shape that, the city really needs to have a say in how its historic resources are treated," said Brent Runyon, Thomasville Landmarks, Inc. executive director.
The group is now working on a policy that would require a waiting period for the owners of such historic houses before they could demolish them. That way they could try to move the house, or as a last resort salvage the materials.
