Rec. Department opens cooling centers

August 14, 2007

Albany-  Shelters are now open in Albany and Dougherty County as we endure a ninth day of temperatures at or above 100 degrees.

The Recreation Department and Emergency Management opened fives shelters where people can go to get out of the heat.

They are:

    • Bill Miller Community Center
    • Carver Sports Center
    • Henderson Community Center
    • Thornton Community Center
    • Turner Gym

"These are permanent hours for the fall so they're open in the afternoon, they're opening morning hours as well but you typically, the heat is worse in the afternoon so they're open in the afternoon through December," said Suzanne Davis, Albany Recreation Department Director.

Monday through Thursday in the afternoon the centers will be open from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00p.m. On Friday the centers close at 6:00 p.m.

Some of the centers offer activities or after school programs.
