Valdosta football looks for improvement

August 10, 2007

Valdosta -- Last year's 1-9 season is something Valdosta High School and head coach Rick Tomberlin are not accustomed to seeing, and quickly got to work preparing for this year.

The Wildcats are becoming more comfortable in their second season with the new head coach, and the coach is comfortable with many returning starters on both sides of the ball.

Valdosta had seemingly an entire season of bad luck in 2006, with seven of the nine losses by 5-points or less.

The Cats and coach Tomberlin figure they're due for some breaks this year, which could make it a great season.

Tomberlin says, "I have been lucky enough to be honest with you to go 15-0 three times. Each time there were some times in the season that we got a break here and won a close game. We were able to stay healthy. So, I guess to a certain extent you are dependent on luck. But we believe hard work and determination and that kind of thing overcomes any kind of bad breaks or bad luck. "

Valdosta High opens the season at home against Jordan High from Utah.
