Albany -- With the heat index approaching 110 Tuesday, the Monroe football team decided against an afternoon practice.
The Tornados instead got on the new FieldTurf practice field at 6:30pm, and found perfect weather for their first day in full pads.
Monroe returns fourteen starters to this years team, including senior quarterback Sherman Stephens.
The Tornados are the defending region champions, winning ten games and advancing to the second round of the state playoffs last year.
The championship was the first in the schools history, and head coach Charles Truitt says last seasons success has left his team hungry for more.
"We sorta got a taste in our mouth of being able to see good things when you work hard, and prepare hard," says Truitt. "We're hoping that taste will continue to remain in the guys mouth, to maybe win some more games, and take it to the next phase."
Monroe opens the season at home Saturday, September 1st against Terrell County.
