Americus -- The Georgia SouthWestern athletic program make the jump to the NCAA Division II level last year, and the success of the Hurricanes program is due in no small part to Roy and Susan Smith.
GSW holding a ceremony at the Student Success Center Monday, dedicating the baseball and tennis complex in the late-Susan Smith's honor.
Hurricanes athletic director Randolph Barksdale says the department budget was just $15,000 in 1979, but they tripled the amount thanks to a booster club set up by the Smiths.
"Without the Smith family, there probably wouldn't be an athletic department at Georgia SouthWestern. They probably contributed more than any single person has to our program, and it's just fitting that we named it in her honor."
The Smith family was also instrumental in getting lights on the baseball field and improvements on the tennis courts.
