Valdosta State holds first practice

August 2, 2007

Valdosta -- The Valdosta State football team was on the practice field for the first time Thursday, with both a morning and afternoon practice session.

David Dean is set to begin his first season as the head coach of the Blazers, taking over for Chris Hatcher.

Valdosta State has been picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference, one spot behind defending champ North Alabama.

Six Blazers have been named to the all-conference team, with Sherard Reynolds getting the nod at both defensive back and return-specialist.

Willie Copeland is preseason first-team all-conference quarterback, and says they're excited to finally be back on the field.

"We went through spring practice, we went through summer workouts, and now we finally get to throw the ball around, and have the coaches teach us a little something, so we're really excited," says Copeland.

Reynolds adds, "We've got 10 starters back on offense, and 10 starters back on defense. We put our offense and defense in during the spring, so everybody is comfortable with the new schemes, so we just have to get batter, that's it."

The Blazers opener against Albany State kicks off at 7pm on September 1st.
