Albany -- Playing in a field against four Darton College golf signee's, recent Deerfield-Windsor graduate James Salter would win the Albany Junior Open at Stonebridge with a score of 1-under par.
Making the feat all the more impressive is Salter never played on the high school golf team.
Salter spent his four years at Deerfield on the baseball diamond, putting competitive golf on the shelf.
Playing in the Junior Open for the first time, Salter shot even par in the opening round, and fired a 71 on the final day for a two-stroke win.
He's headed to Valdosta State in the fall, and is looking to walk on to the Blazers golf team.
Salter says his win in the Junior Open should get some attention in Valdosta.
"I've ruled out the baseball, and I'm really gearing towards the golf," says Salter. "That's what I've been doing this summer, and I plan on playing in another tournament down in Valdosta. I plan on walking on down there. They got a full roster, but hopefully then can find a spot for me."
The Valdosta State golf team finished eleventh at the NCAA Super Regionals last year.
