Fire damaged homes harder to clean up

July 26, 2007

Albany - - The city of Albany is trying to speed up the process of demolishing dilapidated homes, but it could take longer if the structure was ruined by fire.

Code Enforcement Director Mike Tilson says often when a home is destroyed by fire, it's not easy to get in touch with homeowners.

It can also take a while for insurance companies to finish their work.

Even if a judge eventually grants the city permission to tear down the structure, the city must make sure utilities are disconnected, power lines are removed and the property doesn't have asbestos contamination.
