Albany - - East Albany will soon have a new Sports Bar, but the decision came with some controversy at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.

After heated debate, Commissioners approved a liquor license for John Chavez who wants to open a sports bar called Applejax on East Broad Avenue.

Commissioners Jon Howard and Dorothy Hubbard voted against it because of a murder outside of the club last year when it was called the Royal Pool Room.

Chavez says the new bar will be different.

"There was no security before. People were coming in and out bringing their own beer, bringing their own liquor and just coming in there as a hangout place and now we've done away with that," he says.

Chavez hopes to open the new bar by the end of the summer.
