James Salter wins Albany Junior Open

July 24, 2007

Albany -- James Salter wins the Albany Junior Open by two stroke over Evan Hanna, finishing the tournament at one under par.

Hanna won the tournament last year, but his final round 70 wasn't enough to over come an opening day 75.

Ridge Purcell led the Open by a stroke with a 71 Monday, and finished in third place after a 75 today.

Salter had never played in the Junior Open before.

In fact, he hasn't played much golf in recent times, instead concentrating at baseball at Deerfield-Windsor.

"It's about the first time I've been playing competitively in about 6 or 7 years," says Salter. "I really haven't been in to tournament golf, just recreationally I've been keeping up my game. So it's a great big relief to come out here and know that I can still compete."

Salter is headed to Valdosta State in the fall, where he hopes to walk on to the Blazers golf team.

Albany -- The Albany Junior Open golf tournament started at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club Monday.

Darton College is well represented in the tournament, with four incoming freshman in the field this year.

Aaron Elrod is in third place after a round of 73.

Future teammate Ridge Purcell is at the top of the leaderboard, shooting a 1-under par 71 despite two double-bogey's.

He had never played the course at Stonebridge until Monday's round.

Purcell says, "Sometimes I play a course better when I haven't played it before, because I don't know there's trouble out there, and I just bomb it away, and end up being good anyways."

The tournament wraps up Tuesday at Stonebridge.
