Lowndes County -  A horse in North Lowndes County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

EEE is a mosquito-borne disease that causes inflammation or swelling of the brain.

It is rare in humans but symptoms are sudden onset of fever, muscle pains, headache and seizures.  With no treatment or vaccine, it can cause death in approximately 30% of people infected.

This is the first recorded case the South Health District has recorded this year.
