Former deputy under investigation

July 3, 2007

Fitzgerald - - A former Coffee County investigator who resigned from her job last week is still being investigated by the Ben Hill County Sheriff's Department.

America Lopez was an investigator in Coffee County. Last month, she told investigators she changed a friend's vehicle registration and license tag and put them under her name. Shortly after, Ben Hill Deputies arrested a man driving that vehicle and found marijuana inside.

Coffee Deputies don't believe Lopez was involved in the drug exchange, but they say she made a "poor decision" when she changed the registration.

Lopez worked for the county a little over a year. Prior to that, deputies say she worked with the GBI Task force for 7 years.

Ben Hill Sheriff Bobby McLemore says they're still investigating Lopez and he says several other agencies are involved.
