SPLOST fund discussed

July 3, 2007

Lowndes County - Several cities in Lowndes County are concerned this years sales tax money won't be evenly distributed.

But the Lowndes County Commissioners believe it is.

They say the money will be divided as equitably as possible between the county and the cities..with more given to projects that must be completed to fulfil state mandated requirements.

In spite of how it's divided, they say it will cover all major projects everywhere in the county.  "It's going to cover courthouse, jail fortunately. 75 percent of it is going to go towards roads and sewar, bridges, parks and recreation, quality of life issues," says Commission Chairman Rod Casey.

The SPLOST tax is estimated to collect over 183 million dollars over six years.  It will be voted on September 18th.
