Valdosta --      Workers are draining the 18-acre Mill Pond and cleaning it out to better manage storm water runoff.

Crews planned to remove dirt from the lake this week, but rain last week delayed the project.

"Over the last 50 years this lake has taken a beating. Grasses and trees have invaded the lake, and it was slowly choking the life out of the lake," said City Engineer Von Shipmen.

The Mill Pond was a gift the City of Valdosta in 2005.  The city plans to restore the lake and return it to its original size in addition to managing the storm water that flows into it.
