Youth Vs. Experience at Albany Amateur

June 23, 2007

Albany -- The Albany Amateur golf tournament moved from Stonebridge country Club to Grand Island Saturday.

Two-time defending champion Brandon Anthony trailed first round leader Mike Cooper by three strokes going into the day.

Both Cooper and Anthony shoot a one-under-par 71 Saturday, so Cooper heads to Doublegate Sunday with a three-shot lead.

Cooper is looking for his first win in the tournament after back-to-back third place finishes.

The ladies had the afternoon tee times Saturday.

15-year-old Kelly Pearce trailed first round leader Helen Kirgo by four strokes going into the day.

The two dueled it out through the second round, with Kirgo besting Pearce's round of 81 with an 80 of her own.

Kirgo leads Pearce by five-strokes going into Sunday's final round on her home course at Doublegate, and the tournament leader says she enjoyed going head-to-head with the young golfer.

"She shot 81 and I shot 80, so that tells you," says Kirgo. "It was very, very close, and a lot of fun. I enjoyed the pressure. You can't play every Saturday with this kind of pressure. It's like nose to nose, face to face."
