Pelham -- One man is dead and another behind bars tonight after a shooting in Mitchell County.
It happened shortly after 10 PM in the parking lot of a Pelham nightclub.
Pelham Police and the GBI are working together this hour trying to put together the pieces of a shooting last night that took the life of a 40-year-old Pelham man.
It appears that a fight in the parking lot of James Playhouse lead to shots being fired, one of which fatally wounded Edward Jackson.
The small city of Pelham, Georgia is not known for violent crime.
But shortly after 10 PM last night, a nightclub parking lot located on Mitchell Rd. became a crime scene.
Investigator Melvin Ray of the Pelham Police Department is currently working the case. He says, " At 10:06 PM on last night's date we had a shooting that occurred outside of James Playhouse inside Pelham."
According to police, there were between 35 to 50 people in or around James Playhouse when an altercation began in the parking lot.
" Apparently this incident was over something that took place prior to this incident on Thursday evening. It just kind of snow balled from there," says Ray.
Investigators say that one of the subjects involved in the incident shot Edward Jackson once in the left chest. Someone at the scene of the crime assisted with CPR as police and EMS responded to the scene.
When a Pelham Police officer arrived on the scene he found Edward Jackson lying on the ground in a grassy area in the parking lot of James Playhouse. Police assisted with CPR, but by then, it was too late.
Ray adds, " We do have one subject that died from the gunshot wound. And we do have one individual in custody. "
So far, police have arrested 30-year-old Jerry McGraw of Pelham for the murder of Edward Jackson.
Pelham P. D. Investigator Melvin Ray along with agents from the GBI are looking into other subjects that may be connected to the case.
"There are several others pending investigation right now that we have talked to and plan on talking to again," he says.
McGraw remains in jail tonight at the Mitchell County Sheriffs Department. No word yet on a motive or other arrests in the case.
Police say they do not believe that the incident began inside the James Playhouse location.
According to Pelham Police this is the cities first murder in nearly five years.
