Wirth off to great start for Peanuts

June 22, 2007

Albany - The South Georgia Peanuts go for their fifth straight win over the Charlotte County Redfish in Port Charlotte on Friday night.

Right hander Shannon Wirth is scheduled to get the start in the second game of the series.

Wirth, who was released by the Texas Rangers in spring training, is 5-0 this season with 33 strikeouts in 38 innings.

He says the hitters he is facing in the South Coast League are similar to those he was trying to get out in the Rangers organization.

As for his unbeaten record, Wirth says it is real easy to pitch when your offense gives you runs to work with like the Peanuts hitters have this season.

Shannon Wirth said "It is a lot easier pitching with a lead and trying to keep the lead instead having to keep your team in it."

The South Georgia Peanuts wrap their series in Port Charlotte on Saturday and open a three game series Monday night at Anderson.

They are back at home on June 28th to play Charlotte County.

Peanuts manager Wally Backman is holding a youth baseball camp for boys and girls ages 8 and older.

The camp is Friday June 29th and Saturday June 30th from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Paul Eames Complex.

The cost of the camp is $60.00.
