Mitchell moves from coach to parent

June 19, 2007

Albany - Back in February, WALB News 10 Sports profiled the unique mother-daughter relationship between Sherwood Christian girls basketball coach Gina Mitchell and daughter Courtney.

Back then Coach Mitchell wondered what it would be like to watch her daughter play from the stands like other parents.

She will find out this coming season.

Gina Mitchell decided to step down as the Sherwood Christian Lady Eagles coach last month.

In four seasons, she led the Lady Eagles to two region titles and their first ever state final four appearance this year.

Before coming to Sherwood Christian, she also coached three seasons at Tiftarea.

Daughter Courtney, who is the leading score in Lady Eagle history, will transfer to Worth County for her senior season.

A season that will be a tough adjustment for mom who is used to being on the sidelines.

Gina Mitchell said "When you are coaching the pressure is there not only to win but to get the girls to the point where they can be successful for the team. I just felt like it would best to sit back and watch her play and enjoy it."

Steve Nowack, who was an assistant for the boys team, will be the new Lady Eagles head coach.

Sherwood Christian headmaster Dr. Glen Schultz will be the head boys basketball coach.

Schultz, who coached basketball and cross-country before moving into administartion 18 years ago, takes over for Todd Mallory who is stepping down to devote more time to his teaching duties.
